Replica of the Dynamics section gate expander and limiter compressor of Neve V channelstrip available in 500 format
A channel can be composed of several modules
Preamp PRE81+EQ81+V-Dyn or PRE81+EQ51+V-Dyn
The gate /Expander controls are:
Key
Pressing this Button provides a dedicated patch input to the gate only; enabling the gate to be
triggered by an external signal.
The compressor operation is not affected.
INV
This button inverts the external trigger control so that the gate closes when a signal of
the required level is present. This can be used as a « Ducker » or for mutein severe breakthrough frm another source.
HYST
Hysteresis is the difference in dB between the gate mute level (set by the threshold control) and its unmute level.
Varying hysteresis allows more precise triggering of the wanted signal whilst still allowing the correct amount of signal
tail through. (10dB of hysteresis is usually a good starting value for setting the gate). The fully anti-clockwise position
switches the circuit into a 2:1 ration expander.
THR
Provides threshold control over 70dB in two overlapping ranges.
The -30 button adds -30dB to the panel values.
RGE
Sets the range (mute depth) of the gate over a 50dB range.
FAST
Changes the attack time for the circuit from 1ms to 100us.
REL
The release time for the gate/expander is continuously variable from 30ms to 3s
GATE
switches the gate/expander into circuit separatively from the limiter/compressor.
The limiter /compressor controls are:
L/C
switches the limiter compressor into circuit separatively from the gate/expander.
LINK
When Link button is pressed it links the control voltage of the limiter/compresor to another module for stereo or quad ganging. The control voltage is still generated if the limiter compressor is not in circuit and can therefore be used for stereo/quad link
even if it is not actively processing.
GAIN
Gain makeup of up 30dB is provided to enable an excellent signal to noise ration to be maintened throughout
the path even under heavy compression.
THR
Threshold level can be controlled over 50dB in two overlapping ranges
The -20 button adds -20dB to the panel values.
RAT
Controls the compression ratio with a conveniently arranged law betweeen 1:1 and limiting.
Fast
Nominally changes the impulse attack time from 1ms to 100us. However the attack time is programme dependent, normally having a 7ms time constant, with faster time constants being applied to transient programme.
REL
The release time can be varied from 30ms to 3s with the additional benefit of automatic hold and impulse release circuits to remove pumping
and breething effects.
AUTO
Switches the release control to a triple time constant program dependent release time.
Gain reduction Led
A simple metering fonction is performed by the tri color Led .
The led indicate Green for a small gain reduction, orange for medium and red for large (1, 5 and 10dB respectively).
Replica of the Sansamp Classic pedal in API 500 format (compatible with 51X format)
Inspired by the famous Sans Amp Classic
Guitar and bass pedal of the 80's converted to the 500 format
Also allows you to reamp a track into the No Amp when no instrument is plugged into the jack.
ORDER ONLINEFX Pedal Insertion Version 500 (compatible with format 51X)
This module allows the use of guitar effect pedals via the inserts of analogue mixers or soundcard interfaces.
This allows effects to be added to recorded tracks.
This module has a +4dB line input which provides a high impedance output with gain control to drive an effects pedal input via a jack connector.
A high impedance jack input allows the pedal output to be picked up and then via a volume control, to drive a balanced +4dB output stage.
This output feeds the insert return of the mixer or interface.
All guitar effects (wha-wha, disto, delay etc...) can be used.
The high impedance outputs can also be used to directly drive an amp for reamping. The high impedance inputs can also be used as a direct box to record the instrument directly to a track.
The icing on the cake is a 9V power supply output via a standard connector on the front panel. This power supply has a voltage control with LED voltmeter. The voltage range goes from 5V to 12V, which allows you to get particular sounds on certain pedals, especially distortions or fuzz (battery wear simulation).
ORDER ONLINEThe 500 format created by API allows the use of different preamplifiers, compressors... in the same box that provides the supply voltages and inputs/outputs. (API is a registered trademark of Automated Processes Incorporated)
The size of the modules is standardized and each module is equipped with a board edge connector that plugs into a female connector on the backplane.
The 15 pins of the connector provide the standard +16V/-16V and 48V for phantom power. A balanced input and output as well as a link for the compressors.
There are still some pins used by some PLC modules (2nd unbalanced input/output for 512 preamps, gain resistance for 515 modules etc.)
A new 51X standard has been introduced to provide additional options by using an 18-pin connector. This allows to add the necessary +/- 24V voltages to some modules while keeping the compatibility with modules typically in 500 format.
Indeed, the 500 modules only use 15 of the 18 available pins.
This allows new functions but we can go even further by making the backplane modular. This is why Labo K Effects has studied the problem and is able to offer 3 types of backplanes that can be fitted to the 500 boxes.
These backplanes use 18-pin connectors to be compatible with the 500 and X51 standards. These backplanes have been named the K551X.
The K551X are available in 3 versions for the moment.
A standard version with 4 slots, a standard version with 2 slots to create a 10 slot backplane (4+4+2)
The 3rd version with 2 slots is special. It allows 2 adjacent modules to communicate via a relay system controlled by one of the 2 modules.
This allows 2 adjacent modules to have independent inputs and outputs while being able to be chained if desired.
Take for example a microphone preamplifier and equalizer connected to this backplane. An Insert switch on the preamp module would allow the EQ to be inserted into the preamp path.
The different types of backplanes are powered by a PSU BUS using IDC connectors
This modular system makes it possible to develop modules using different connectors if more options are required. It is sufficient that the backplane is compatible with the PSU bus.
This system allows you to change configuration very easily by replacing one backplane with another adapted to the new module.

Lunchbox containing 1 loop of insert for effects pedals.
Lunchbox containing 2 loops of inserts for effects pedals.
19" Rack containing 4 loops of inserts for effects pedals.
This system makes it possible to use guitar effect pedals via the inserts of analog mixers or interfaces of sound cards.
This allows you to add effects to recorded tracks or live on stage.
Each of the 1/4 loops has an XLR line + 4dB input that provides a high impedance output to drive the input of an effects pedal via a Jack connector.
A high impedance input jack allows you to recover the output of the pedal and via a volume control, to attack a balanced output stage + 4dB XLR. This output feeds the insertion return of the mixer or interface.
All effects for guitar (wha-wha, disto, Delay etc ...) can be used.
High impedance outputs can also directly attack an amp to Reaming. High impedance inputs can also be used as a DI Box to directly record the instrument on a track.
The various functions of this device make it a nice tool for the studio or for the stage
Best of all, a 9V power output via a standard connector is available on the front. This power supply has a voltage adjustment with LED voltmeter.
